Class activity: Boundaries of clientelism
In groups of 3-4, consider the following:
Clientelism can take many forms and doesn’t have to be someone literally giving you $20 after you come out of the voting booth. How would you then distinguish clientelism from the “normal” electoral politics we’re used to in the US? Specifically, how would you distinguish it from programmatic politics, where politicians can run on platforms to provide services/goods, and pork-barrel politics where politicians reward constituents or special interests for their support?
